Some papers report results; this one issued a language. Yaghi, O'Keeffe and coauthors used their 2003 Nature review to define reticular synthesis as the deliberate assembly of rigid molecular building blocks into predetermined networks held by strong bonds, and to argue that net topology, the abstract graph of joints and struts, should be the primary design variable of solid-state chemistry.

The review's practical contribution was taxonomy. Secondary building units, the recurring metal-cluster geometries like the Zn4O octahedron and the Cu2 paddlewheel square, were catalogued alongside the default nets they generate. The authors made the then-provocative claim that of the millions of conceivable networks, a small set of high-symmetry topologies would dominate real syntheses, and that a chemist who learned perhaps a dozen nets could anticipate most structures before running a reaction. Twenty years of crystallography have largely vindicated that bet.

Critically, the manifesto has soft spots. It projects an image of deterministic design that day-to-day MOF synthesis, with its solvent screens, modulator tricks and stubborn interpenetration, does not always honor; ask anyone who has tried to make a predicted giant-pore framework on the first attempt. The strong-bond criterion also quietly excluded the flexible, weaker-linked materials Kitagawa's school was developing, and the two traditions took years to reconcile.

As a reading experience it is dense, closer to a field's founding legal document than a narrative. But the 2025 Nobel citation for metal-organic frameworks is, in essence, a citation of the program this paper wrote down. Anyone entering the field should read it early, then reread it after a year at the bench, when its confidence will feel alternately inspiring and amusing.
